The Rottnest Bakery and Cafe
Some say the Rottnest Island Bakery is an institution on the island, it has been around since the 1980’s or even longer! All food is baked on the island and I certainly can vouch for that as one late night we walked past after dinner and were met with a beautiful baking aroma. The Bakery stocks the Australian favourites such as pies, sausage rolls and jam donuts. Did you know that a pie and milkshake go so well together in summer? Or dipping chips into a milkshake tastes pretty okay?
Service is simple, you order what you see at the counter or on the menu board, collect it and pick a table inside or outside under the big old trees. The bakery also sells bread, cakes and slices, ice cream from it’s Gelatino bar, milkshakes, thick shakes, tea and Grinders coffee, continental rolls and roast chickens (much cheaper compared to the ones on the Aristos menu). Burgers are whipped up in the bar from 10:30am – 2:30pm.
The Bakery is located inside the Thomson Mall, right in the middle of the main settlement area and next door to the General Store. It is the perfect place to replenish after a swim or cycle around the island, for us though we were starting our day with breakfast before leaving on a 9.4 km ride to the west end, Cape Vlamingh.
The Jaffa Slice was moist and compact, I opted for cake as I wanted to fill up on sugar before the ride.
Cheese and Bacon Pie
DD loved his steak cheese and bacon pie and oddly ate it without tomato sauce.
No cars are allowed on the island so most people bring their own bicycles from home or hire them. This is as close as you one can get to the bicycle culture of Amsterdam in the southern hemisphere! It really is special and a lot of fun whizzing around on bicycles.
Alfresco Area of The Rottnest Bakery
The food was fairly good and prices reasonable, taking into consideration that the running costs of business on the island is higher than the mainland. The bakery offers a nice casual atmosphere and the alfresco area is ideal to watch the bustling scene in the mall. Bicycle racks are located at the front and be sure to lock up your bicycle.
Rottnest Island is a 30 minute ferry ride from Fremantle. More more information on how to visit the island click here.
Love my Rotto is an excellent website that is free to join, it showcases intimate stories and memories from travellers of the island. Regular prizes and discounts are given to members.
