Small Print Bakery & Roastery, Perth CBD

Part of the Print Hall establishment Small Print is a bakery and coffee roaster serving tasty food and sensational coffee at fairly reasonable prices in the heart of Perth’s CBD. Small Print is hidden underneath Print Hall, the former Newspaper House on St Georges Terrace, it also forms part of new and exciting  Brookfield Place and this is the 3rd place we are visiting in the newly developed precinct. Walking into Small Print I can just imagine how busy this little place would be during the weekday morning runs. Saturday morning however is a different story, it is peaceful and only a handful of people around.

A brand new and a modern interior

The interior is pretty impressive especially the deck chairs! The coffee machine has it’s very own corner space and several grinders are ready with the various beans on offer. It wasn’t until we had placed our order for coffees that we realised there were seven coffee bean varieties to choose from as well as filtered coffee, our bad for being too eager to order! Just like Yahava coffee in the Swan Valley, at Small Print you can choose your ‘style of coffee’ – from Brazil to Kenya to Guatemala beans. This definitely takes ordering a coffee to the next level in Perth. Consumers have a choice, I love it!

Small Print do not offer a menu, all food is baked and prepared on the premises and available for selection from the glass counters. The selection of scrumptious bakery food includes; pastries, breads, muffins, cakes, slices, croissants and toasted sandwiches. DD ordered the toasted ham and cheese sandwich, a classic favourite in the world of sandwiches. The ham was thick and the bread was lightly toasted in what I am guessing to be a fry pan instead of a sandwich press that totally flattens the bread. As far as ham and cheese sandwiches go, this one was exceptionally tasty and fresh.

Small Print bake all of their pastries on site, in fact in the glass wall room directly behind the counter. Spotting the duck and white bean paste pastie, it was my choice straight away. I was extremely happy when the guy asked if I wanted salad with it, yes please! The duck pastie was served with a Mexican infused sauce and a light salad with dressing, it was absolutely delicious and one of the healthiest pasties I have had to date. The pastry was flaky and light, inside a good portion of shredded duck meat and white beans. The sauce added a perfect zing to the dish which costed under $10.00!

The coffees came out with an impressive etching in the milk froth and tasted sensational. Emphasis has been placed on serving quality coffee at Small Print and head brewer Mitch Smith ensures this happens. They serve an interesting variety of ice cold coffee which includes the Japanese style cold drip and the New Orleans style 18 hour cold brew. Definitely something we will be trying next time.

Overall our experience at the new Small Print Bakery & Roastery was great, it was a nice a change from having a big breakfast.
