Il Lido Italian Canteen, Cottesloe Beach

Walking into Il Lido the coffee machine is the first thing I see, an area dedicated for brewing and serving as well as furnishing takeaway orders. Il lido has somewhat of a casually relaxed vibe about it, it might be the Cottesloe Beach side location or the long solid timber communal tables and the beautiful large windows intended for gazing with a cup in hand. It is table service and we take our seats at one of the high bench tables.

The breakfast menu offers a number of healthy wholesome dishes without taking away from the flavour factor. A simple fruit toast becomes so much more with a smearing of rich goats cheese and drizzling of honey, my decision was sealed when I saw this on the menu and ordered it straight away. Italian Prosecco (Italian sparkling)  and a bloody mary cocktail are also on the menu for celebrations or maybe ‘a just because’ moment. For a budget of $5.00 you can also order the toast and preserves.

I get the feeling that coffee at Il Lido is just as important as the food. Upon receiving the menus we were given the opportunity to order our coffees. Il Lido’s coffee beans are sourced from a roaster located 13kms from the café. The Mano a Mano coffee blend is roasted in small batches inside the Gordon Street Garage establishment (another great breakfast spot in West Perth!). You can read more about the hand to hand specialty roaster here, we particularly like that Mano a Mano run a tight ship working towards preserving the freshness of the coffee bean for the end result, my cup of cappuccino.

Our cappuccinos arrived at the table fairly quickly, presented with latte art in the milk froth. One of the best coffees we have had on the Marine Parade strip in Cottesloe.

Our dishes were delicious. Goats cheese, honey and fresh thyme in combination on a plate simply works. The two slices of fruit toast were thick and the texture of the toasted bread with the creamy goats cheese was addictive, so much so my coffee went cold waiting for me. Although it is a sweet dish the goats cheese does balance that sweetness a little.

The Australian bruschetta version consisted of smeared avocado, protein packed quinoa grains, whipped goats cheese and spinach leaves. With avocados available all year round from Perth grocers, it has become a staple in our diets. The new Australian tourism campaign ‘Restaurant Australia‘ reveals that 70% of  Australia’s avocado produce comes from the southern forest region of Western Australia, a little fact this local Perth girl was unaware of!

Cottesloe Beach is not only an international tourist attraction, it is loved and frequented by the locals of Perth. Historically the first surfing and surf lifesaving club for Perth was established in the early 1900′s here. The area was home to one of Australia’s Prime Minister, Mr John Curtin. The 20km swim race to Rottnest Island event is held every year as well as the Sculptures by the Sea Event. Marine Parade has a number of cafes and restaurants. A sealed path extends all the way to Swanbourne Beach and is great for dog walking, jogging or strolling. There is a children’s playground on the other side of the carpark. The ocean waters are crystal blue and the sand is soft and clean. An elevated green grassed esplanade area under tall Norfolk pines makes the perfect picnic spot to watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean. Summer or winter, rain or shine Cottesloe Beach is magical at sunset.
